UK Study Visa Guide 2026

UK Student Visa for Algerians: Types, Rules & Work

Everything Algerian students need: visa categories, work limits, CAS, finances, eVisa, and post-study Graduate Route — explained in plain language.

Which UK visa do you need to study?

Most degree and long language programs require the UK Student visa (sponsored by a licensed education provider with a CAS). Short English courses under 6 months may use a Short-term study visa. Visitor visas are for tourism and limited study only. Getting the category right — and meeting the 70-point financial rules — is essential for approval.

Immigration rules change. This page is educational guidance for Algerian applicants — not official Home Office advice. Confirm fees, living-cost rates, and eligibility on gov.uk before you apply.

Main UK visa types for study

Compare the routes Algerian students use for London language stays and university degrees.

Student Visa (main route)

Most common

The standard route for university degrees, foundation/year-one pathways, and many longer language programs with a licensed Student sponsor. Requires a CAS and usually 70 points.

Who it is for
Students with a CAS from a licensed UK education provider for courses typically longer than 6 months (and many shorter sponsored courses).
Work permission
Degree-level: usually up to 20 hrs/week in term + full-time in holidays. Below degree-level: often more restricted (commonly 10 hrs/week). Check your visa conditions.
Typical duration
Matches your course dates on the CAS, plus wrap-up time. Digital eVisa in 2026.

Short-term Study Visa

Under 6 months

For short English language courses (usually up to 6 months; some English courses up to 11 months under specific rules). Not for full degrees.

Who it is for
Students taking short language courses who do not need a Student visa CAS route.
Work permission
No work allowed. No switching to work routes from inside the UK in most cases.
Typical duration
Limited to the short course length — not a pathway to Graduate Route.

Standard Visitor Visa

Visit only

For tourism, family visits, and limited recreational study (typically under 30 days and not a main course of study). Not for degree enrollment.

Who it is for
Visitors who are not full-time students.
Work permission
No paid or unpaid work; study only within visitor limits.
Typical duration
Usually up to 6 months per visit; not a student status.

Graduate Route (post-study)

After studies

A separate post-study work permission after you successfully complete an eligible UK course on a Student visa. No job offer required to apply.

Who it is for
Eligible graduates who studied in the UK on a Student visa and meet Graduate Route criteria.
Work permission
Flexible work almost any skill level (with limited exceptions). Not a settlement visa by itself.
Typical duration
2 years if you apply by 31 Dec 2026; 18 months from 1 Jan 2027; 3 years for PhD/doctoral.

Basic UK Student visa rules

The Home Office system is points-based — know these rules before you file.

CAS from a licensed sponsor

You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — a unique reference from your university or college.

70 points required

Typically: 50 points for CAS + 10 for English + 10 for maintenance (funds). Missing funds evidence = refusal.

28-day funds rule

Show required tuition balance + living costs held for 28 consecutive days, with evidence dated within 31 days of application.

Unauthorized work

Working more hours than your visa allows, or working when your conditions say 'no work', can lead to cancellation and bans.

Work while studying (limited)

Degree students often work 20 hrs/week in term. Language / below-degree courses usually have stricter limits — always read your visa vignette/eVisa conditions.

Dependants (restricted)

Under current rules, most taught undergraduates/masters cannot bring family. Exceptions exist for research/PhD and some government-sponsored students.

Can you work on a UK student visa?

Yes for many degree students — with clear weekly limits. Short-term study: usually no.

1

Degree-level Student visa

Typically up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official holidays — unless your visa says otherwise.

2

Below degree-level / many language courses

Work is often limited to 10 hours per week in term (or prohibited on Short-term study). Confirm the condition code on your decision.

3

Self-employment & freelancing

Usually not allowed on a Student visa. Do not run a business or freelance as your work permission.

4

Graduate Route after studies

After completing an eligible course, you may apply to stay and work without a sponsor job offer — duration depends on application date (see 2026/2027 changes).

5

Short-term study visa

No work, no work placement, and usually no switching to a work visa from inside the UK.
