The interview at the US Embassy in Algiers is the most stressful step for Algerian students. Yet it is predictable: the consular officer almost always asks the same kinds of questions. Here are the 25 most common ones, grouped by topic, with how to answer them.

What the officer wants to check

  1. You are a genuine student with a coherent study plan.
  2. You have the means to pay for your studies and your life there.
  3. You intend to respect your status and have a clear plan for afterwards.

Every question serves one of these three points.

Your studies (questions 1 to 7)

  1. Why do you want to study in the United States?
  2. Why did you choose this university?
  3. What will you study, and why this major?
  4. How many universities did you apply to? Where were you admitted?
  5. What are your grades / your bac average?
  6. Who is your academic advisor? Where is the campus?
  7. How long is your program?

Tip: mention specific things about your university (a course, a lab, a ranking, a cost that fits your budget). "Because it's America" convinces nobody.

Your background (questions 8 to 12)

  1. What did you study in Algeria?
  2. Why are you changing fields? (if your plan doesn't follow your background)
  3. Do you work now? What do you do?
  4. Why don't you study this in Algeria?
  5. What is your English test score?

Tip: if you are changing fields, explain the link with your experience or your career plan.

Funding (questions 13 to 18)

  1. How much does your program cost per year?
  2. Who is sponsoring you?
  3. What does your sponsor do? How much does he or she earn?
  4. Do you have a scholarship?
  5. How will you pay for the second and third years?
  6. Do you plan to work in the US?

Tip: know the exact amount on your I-20. Your sponsor (often a parent) must have income and statements consistent with that amount. To estimate your budget, read our article on the cost of studying in the USA.

After your studies (questions 19 to 22)

  1. What will you do after graduation?
  2. Do you have family in the United States?
  3. What job can you get in Algeria with this degree?
  4. Will you come back to Algeria?

Tip: describe a realistic plan: a sector, companies, a job. If you have family in the US, say so: lying about it is far worse than the answer itself.

Trick questions (questions 23 to 25)

  1. Have you ever been refused a visa?
  2. Have you traveled abroad before?
  3. Why should I give you this visa?

Tip: always tell the truth, consistent with your DS-160. The officer has it in front of them.

The 7 golden rules

  • Answer in English, in short sentences.
  • Don't recite a memorized text: the officer notices immediately.
  • Hand over a document only when asked.
  • Arrive at the exact time of your appointment, without a phone or large bag.
  • Set your social media to public before the interview, as the embassy requires.
  • Dress simply and neatly.
  • Reread your DS-160 the day before.

Frequently asked questions

What language is the F-1 interview in Algiers held in?

A student visa interview is usually held in English. The officer also checks that your level matches your program. Practise answering in English, even if you are going for an intensive English program.

How long does the interview last?

Often two to five minutes. The officer decides mostly from your answers, which is why short, clear and personal answers matter.

What should I do after a 214(b) refusal?

A 214(b) refusal means the officer was not convinced by your plan or your ties. You can reapply, with a new DS-160 and new fees, after fixing the weak point of your file.
