IELTS is the English test most often required of Algerian students heading to the UK, and it is also accepted in the United States. But there are several versions, and taking the wrong one can block a visa. Here are the prices, the centres and which version to choose, based on the British Council in Algeria (October 2026).

You can pay by bank transfer, bank deposit or cash (a 1% stamp duty is added for cash). IELTS for UKVI cannot be paid in cash. Payment is due within 72 hours of registering.
Test centres
- Algiers: Jardy Hotel, Bab Ezzouar. It is the only IELTS for UKVI centre in Algeria.
- Oran: Imtiyaz El Djazair.
- Constantine: INSIM.
Since April 30, 2026, every test is taken on computer: results in 1 to 2 days, more test dates, and you can retake a single skill (One Skill Retake) if one score falls short.
IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI?
This is the most common question, and the answer depends on your program:
- Bachelor's, master's or PhD in the UK: the university can assess your English itself. Standard IELTS Academic is enough in most cases.
- Foundation year, English course or program below bachelor's level: the visa often requires a Home Office approved test, so IELTS for UKVI.
- United States: IELTS Academic is enough. IELTS for UKVI adds nothing.
If in doubt, ask the university which test it accepts before you register.

In the US, many universities also accept TOEFL iBT or the Duolingo English Test: Avila, for example, asks for Duolingo 90 for a bachelor's and 95 for a master's. If your level is too low, an intensive English course in the USA can come before your degree.
5 tips to pass IELTS
- Register 6 to 8 weeks before the university deadline.
- Practise on computer, since that is how the test is now taken.
- Work on Writing: it is often the lowest score for French-speaking Algerian candidates.
- Use the free resources included in the fee (IELTS Ready Premium).
- Bring the same ID on test day as at registration.
