The USA or the UK? Almost every Algerian student who wants to study in English asks this question. Both countries have world-class universities, but their systems are very different. Here is a point-by-point comparison, with the rules as of October 2026.
The comparison at a glance
| Criterion | United States | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's length | 4 years | 3 years (England) |
| Master's length | 1 to 2 years | 1 year |
| Visa | F-1, interview in Algiers | Student visa, online file and VFS |
| Visa fees | $350 SEVIS + $185 | £558 + £776 health surcharge per year |
| Work during studies | On campus, 20 h a week | 20 h a week, anywhere |
| After graduation | OPT: 12 months (up to 36 in STEM) | Graduate Route: 2 years, then 18 months from 2027 |
| Entry without the bac | Possible (community college, English) | Rare |
1. Length and total cost
The UK wins on length: a one-year master's means a single year of tuition and rent. The US wins on flexibility: a community college from about $8,000 a year, then a transfer to a university, can sharply cut the cost of a bachelor's.
For detailed figures: cost of studying in the USA and cost of studying in the UK.
2. The visa
- USA: the decisive step is the interview at the embassy in Algiers. Algeria is not affected by the 2026 visa restrictions. See the F-1 visa guide.
- UK: no interview in most cases, but very strict rules on proof of funds (28 days) and a TB test. See the UK visa guide.
3. The study system
- USA: you often choose your specialty (your major) in the second year, after general education courses. The system is flexible, with lots of continuous assessment.
- UK: you study your specialty from day one. Courses are more focused, with a large share of independent work.
4. Working after graduation
- UK: the Graduate Route lets you work in any sector, without a sponsor: 2 years if you apply by December 31, 2026, 18 months after that, 3 years after a PhD.
- USA: OPT gives 12 months of work in your field, extendable by 24 months for STEM degrees. A proposal for very high fees was published in October 2026, but it is not in force.
