With the Algerian bac, you can get into a British university. Depending on the university and your average, you will go straight into the first year or take a foundation year first. Here is how to know which route applies to you, and how to prepare your application.
Is the Algerian bac recognized?
British universities assess foreign qualifications themselves. Many consider that one extra year of study is needed after a bac with 12 years of schooling. Others accept it directly with a high enough average. An example:
- Coventry University: bachelor's open to holders of the Algerian bac with an average of 12/20 (see the Coventry guide).
The most selective universities often ask for a foundation year or a completed first year at an Algerian university.
The two possible routes
Direct entry into the first year
- For bac holders with a good average.
- Bachelor's in 3 years (in England).
- Usual IELTS requirement: about 6.0, with at least 5.5 in each part.
Foundation year
- For a lower average or English that is not yet strong enough.
- About 9 months of academic English and core subjects.
- So 4 years in total to the bachelor's.
- For this type of course, the visa often requires an approved test such as IELTS for UKVI. See our IELTS guide.
The application file
- Bac transcripts (and high school transcripts), with an English translation.
- A valid passport.
- Personal statement: a motivation letter about your study plan.
- A reference letter from a teacher.
- An English score (IELTS or another test the university accepts).
Most bachelor's applications go through UCAS, the national application platform. Some universities also accept direct applications from international students.
Ideal timeline for a September start
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| October to January | Choose universities, apply |
| June to July | Bac results, confirm your offer |
| July to August | Deposit, CAS, visa application |
| September | Departure and start of classes |
With a conditional offer, you often only need to send your bac results in July to confirm it. Plan your budget from the start: see the cost of studying in the UK.
And after the bachelor's?
After a UK degree, the Graduate Route lets you stay and work in the UK: 2 years if you apply by December 31, 2026, 18 months from January 1, 2027.
We help you choose between direct entry and a foundation year based on your average. Try our UK university search or tell us about your plans.
