The UK master's is one of the most sought-after degrees among Algerian graduates: it lasts one year, it is recognized worldwide and it gives access to the Graduate Route to work in the UK afterwards. Here are the admission requirements with an Algerian licence and the steps to follow.
Admission requirements
Your licence average
British universities convert your mark out of 20 into a UK equivalent. As an example, Coventry University asks for a licence with 13 to 14/20 depending on the program. Russell Group universities often aim higher.
An Algerian master 1 or master 2 strengthens your file, especially if your licence average is borderline.
English
- IELTS Academic 6.5 in general, or the TOEFL equivalent (88 at Coventry).
- If your score is slightly below, many universities offer a pre-sessional: an English course of a few weeks before the master's.
See our guide to IELTS in Algeria.
Other documents
- Licence diploma and transcripts, translated into English.
- Personal statement.
- One or two reference letters.
- CV, especially for management or MBA programs.
September or January start?
Many universities have two intakes: September (the main one) and January. Some even have one in May. For September, apply between November and March: places and scholarships go fast.
How much does it cost?
At Coventry, the MSc Computer Science costs £19,500, minus the £2,000 international scholarship. Add at least £10,539 of living costs to show outside London, the visa (£558) and the health surcharge. Details in our article on the cost of studying in the UK.
Scholarships for a master's
- Chevening: fully funds a one-year master's. You need at least 2 years of work experience. Applications usually open in August and close in early October.
- University scholarships: automatic discounts or merit awards.
See our scholarships guide for Algerians.
After the master's: the Graduate Route
Once you graduate, you can apply for the Graduate visa from inside the UK:
- 2 years if you apply by December 31, 2026;
- 18 months from January 1, 2027;
- 3 years after a PhD.
This visa lets you work in any sector, without a sponsoring employer.
The steps, in order
- Shortlist 3 to 5 programs that match your average.
- Take IELTS.
- Apply online on each university's website.
- Accept an offer and pay the deposit to get your CAS.
- Apply for the Student visa: see our UK student visa guide.
The UK package is free for university applicants who already have IELTS. See our packages or our Study in the UK page.
